Diversity is a pressing issue in modern Britain as we debate what it means to be British –
whether we accept a narrow, traditional definition or embrace the new influences offered
by decades of immigration. A celebration of our diverse cultures and communities can be
a vibrant part of what it means to be British today.
However, despite this, today’s diverse population is not always fully and fairly reflected
in the media representations of our everyday lives: and so the European Week of Media
and Diversity is an important contribution to this debate.

About the European Week of Media and Diversity
In 2007 the European Week of Media and Diversity will take place all across Europe between 19 and 25 March.
This year’s edition of the European Week of Media and Diversity will focus on the theme “Equal Opportunities for All!”
The annual week was launched four years ago by Online/More Colour in the Media, the European network on media and minorities based in the Netherlands, to highlight the necessity of more diversity in the media and to start a more constructive dialogue between media professionals, NGO’s and minority audiences.
During the Week partners from more than ten EU countries are organising events ranging from film screenings to discussions in the European parliament, from conferences to the publication of articles and researches related to the subject. They are NGO’s, unions of journalists, schools of journalism, research institutes, media education and vocational training organisations, diversity managers from public broadcasters, programme makers, media-watch organisations, workers’ unions and community media.

Inclusion Through Media supports European Week of Media and Diversity
The European Week of Media and Diversity is supported by the Inclusion Through Media Development Partnership (ITM), a media development partnership led by Hi8us Projects.
Since established in 1994, Hi8us has provided young people at risk of exclusion with the opportunity to gain first hand media production experience and to collaborate with media professionals to ensure that their own stories and experiences reach the mainstream media.
Hi8us Projects and Online/ More Colour in the Media are both part of a larger Transnational Partnership called DigiTales. DigiTales is a digital storytelling project involving people from across Europe making short films using their own words, photos and drawings to make a two-minute film about their lives. Stories are coming in from Finland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Slovakia and the UK.
